Built for practitioners implementing and supporting EC

This is a hands-on functional configuration program built for people who want to work directly in Employee Central — no coding is required, since BCUI, Admin Center, and the Business Rule Engine are all no-code configuration tools. An HR functional background helps with terminology but isn't mandatory.

Interview prep every module

Freshers often confuse SAP HCM (on-premise) with SuccessFactors Employee Central (cloud). This module establishes the correct positioning from day one.

  • SuccessFactors suite overview: EC, Recruiting, Onboarding, Learning, Performance & Goals
  • EC's role as the HR System of Record
  • SAP HCM (on-premise) vs SuccessFactors EC (cloud)
  • Cloud SaaS architecture: multi-tenant, quarterly H1/H2 releases
  • Employee Self-Service (ESS), Manager Self-Service (MSS), HR Admin roles
  • Platform navigation: Admin Center, instance management, provisioning overview
  • Joule AI integration for conversational HR
  • C_THR81 certification overview and exam structure
Interview note — SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central is SAP's cloud-native core HR platform that serves as the central system of record for all employee data, updated quarterly and accessible globally from any device.

Understanding the difference between Admin Center and Provisioning is critical — many configuration steps are only visible in Provisioning.

  • Instance types: Production, Preview (sandbox), Test
  • Admin Center: the primary HR administrator configuration hub
  • Provisioning: partner/consultant-only deep configuration layer
  • Company Settings and Instance Management
  • Core EC pages: People Profile, Org Chart, Document Center
  • Super Admin vs HR Admin vs End User role differences
  • Quarterly release cycle: preview, production, release notes
  • SuccessFactors Help Portal and SAP Learning Hub
  • Upgrade Center: feature activation and release upgrades
Interview note — Provisioning access is restricted to registered, certified SAP partner consultants — customers do not have provisioning access, which is why certain deep configuration tasks require consultant involvement.

Data Models are the architectural backbone of EC — every field, record structure, and validation rule traces back to a Data Model configuration.

  • Six core Data Models: CDM, Country-Specific CDM, SDM, Country-Specific SDM, HR Data Model, Propagation Data Model
  • Corporate Data Model (CDM): organisational objects
  • Succession Data Model (SDM): employee-level fields across portlets
  • Country-Specific Data Models for local legal/statutory requirements
  • Propagation Data Model: auto-propagating data between portlets
  • BCUI: graphical Data Model editing (modern approach)
  • XML editing in provisioning (legacy/advanced approach)
  • Field labels, required/optional settings, visibility, field-level permissions
Interview note — BCUI is the recommended approach for most Data Model changes in modern implementations — graphical and error-resistant — while XML editing is reserved for complex configurations not yet exposed in BCUI.

Foundation Objects are the first configuration deliverable in every EC implementation — you cannot create employee records without a correctly defined organisational structure.

  • Foundation Objects and their role in EC organisational design
  • Legal Entity, Business Unit, Division, Department, Location, Cost Center, Job Classification, Job Code, Pay Grade, Pay Range
  • Parent-child hierarchies between Foundation Objects
  • Creating, editing, deactivating Foundation Objects in Admin Center
  • Effective dating of Foundation Objects
  • Picklist Management: dropdown value lists
  • Association between Foundation Objects and employee records
  • Importing Foundation Objects via CSV upload
Interview note — Foundation Objects are the "master data" of Employee Central's organisational layer — just as GL accounts are master data in SAP FI, they define the structural entities every employee record references.

MDF is the extensibility engine of Employee Central — understanding it enables consultants to meet custom client requirements without modifications.

  • Metadata Framework (MDF): purpose, capabilities, use cases
  • Generic Objects: custom object types with custom fields and associations
  • Object Definition: fields, field types, validations, associations
  • Associations: one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many
  • Effective dating in MDF objects
  • Adding MDF objects to People Profile as custom portlets
  • Standard MDF-based objects: Spot Bonus, Global Benefits, Position, Pay Component, Pay Group
  • Foundation Objects vs MDF Generic Objects — when to use which
Interview note — MDF Generic Objects allow completely custom HR data structures without any development — the first tool consultants reach for when a standard object doesn't meet a client's requirement.

RBP is one of the most complex and frequently misconfigured areas of EC — incorrect permissions cause serious data exposure or process blockers in production.

  • RBP architecture: Permission Roles, Permission Groups, Target Populations
  • Permission Role: what actions a role can perform on which objects
  • Permission Group: who belongs to a role
  • Target Population: which employees a role member can act on
  • Field, portlet, UI, report and admin function access grants
  • Dynamic role assignment: direct reports, own HR manager, same department
  • People Profile field- and portlet-level visibility control
  • Admin vs Employee Data vs Workflow permissions
  • Sensitive field protection: salary, personal ID, bank account data
Interview note — The most common RBP mistake is granting a company-wide target population to a restrictive role, meaning every employee can view every other employee's profile — a serious data breach.

The People Profile is the most frequently accessed screen in EC — deep familiarity with its structure is essential for daily support and configuration work.

  • People Profile structure: portlets and their standard content
  • Key portlets: Personal Info, Employment Details, Job Info, Compensation, Job Relationships, National ID, Address, Emergency Contact, Education, Work Permit
  • Effective dating across all EC data changes
  • Employment Information vs Personal Information data models
  • Portlet customisation: adding, removing, reordering
  • Mass Data Change via import
  • Employee Self-Service (ESS) scope
  • Manager Self-Service (MSS) scope
Interview note — Effective dating means every change to an employee's job, compensation, or organisational assignment is stored with a start date, creating a complete historical record at any point in time.

Lifecycle transactions are the most frequently performed HR administrator tasks in EC — mastery here directly translates to daily operational competence.

  • Hire Wizard: step-by-step new employee creation
  • Hire types: New Hire, Rehire, Conversion from Contingent Worker
  • Job Information changes: promotion, demotion, transfer, manager change
  • Compensation changes: salary increase, pay component updates
  • Leave of Absence (LOA) and Return from Leave
  • Termination: voluntary, involuntary, retirement
  • Offboarding triggers via SuccessFactors Offboarding module
  • Global assignment: employees working across multiple countries
  • Concurrent employment: multiple positions simultaneously
Interview note — A job change and a compensation change are processed as separate events on separate portlets — changing a job title does not automatically change compensation, an important difference from SAP HCM.

Workflows enforce business controls — salary or job changes without proper approval are compliance risks, making this a core deliverable in every implementation.

  • Workflow Foundation: request, approval steps, notification
  • Workflow roles: initiator, approver, HR verifier, custom approver
  • Dynamic approver assignment based on manager/HR relationships
  • Parallel vs sequential approval paths
  • Workflow conditions triggered by transaction type or data value
  • Email notification templates and recipient configuration
  • Delegation during manager absence
  • Workflow history and audit trail in Admin Center
  • Business Rules triggering workflows
Interview note — Workflow conditions allow the same transaction type to route through different approval chains depending on data values — small changes may bypass manager approval, large ones require multi-level review.

Business Rules replace what would require custom development in on-premise systems — the primary no-code tool for enforcing logic, data quality, and process automation.

  • Rule types: Validation, Derivation, Trigger
  • Validation Rules: preventing invalid data entry
  • Derivation Rules: auto-populating fields from other field values
  • Trigger Rules: automatically firing workflows or notifications
  • Business Rule Engine: IF/THEN condition builder
  • Rule execution order and priority management
  • Associating rules with specific portlets and events
  • Testing rules with the Rule Tester in Admin Center
  • Common use cases: job code auto-fill, location-based schedules, termination triggers
Interview note — Business Rules execute in a defined priority order — when multiple rules apply to the same event, priority determines execution sequence, critical when one rule's output feeds another's input.

Position Management is one of the most commonly requested EC features by medium-to-large organisations — enabling strategic headcount control impossible with purely employee-based data.

  • Position vs Job Classification: difference and relationship
  • Position attributes: code, title, status, FTE, target FTE
  • Position hierarchy: parent-child relationships
  • Hiring into a position vs hiring directly
  • Position-based hiring approval workflows
  • Vacancy management: open, filled, over-budget positions
  • Mass Position Updates via import
  • Integration with Recruiting/Onboarding
  • Headcount vs target FTE reporting
Interview note — A position can be vacant, budgeted, and part of the hierarchy even before any employee fills it — enabling proactive workforce planning that direct employee management can't provide.

Time Off is the most-used employee self-service feature across industries — incorrectly configured accruals or balances are among the most common production support issues.

  • Absence types, time account types, and accruals
  • Holiday Calendar per country/location
  • Work Schedule: shifts, weekly hours
  • Time Types: Annual Leave, Sick Leave, Maternity Leave
  • Time Account Types: balances, accruals, carryover, maximum limits
  • Leave Booking: ESS request and manager approval
  • Accrual Rules: automated balance calculation
  • Carry-Forward and Payout rules
  • Country-specific Time Off configuration
  • HRIS Sync across system components
Interview note — HRIS Sync is a commonly overlooked step — without running it after changing work schedules or holiday calendars, changes may not propagate correctly to employee time accounts.

Compensation data accuracy directly affects payroll — errors in pay component configuration cascade into incorrect salary calculations, one of the highest-stakes configuration areas in EC.

  • Pay Component: base salary, allowances, bonus
  • Pay Component Group: logical grouping for reporting
  • Compensation Portlet in the employee profile
  • Pay Grade and Pay Range linked to job codes
  • Compensation History tracking over time
  • Recurring vs non-recurring pay components
  • Spot Bonus: one-time recognition payment
  • Compensation Information bulk import via CSV
Interview note — Pay Components are the source data for both EC Payroll and integrated third-party payroll systems — clean, correctly typed configuration is non-negotiable wherever EC feeds payroll.

Payroll is the most financially critical downstream process from EC — integration errors cause delayed or incorrect salary payments.

  • EC Payroll vs third-party payroll integration architecture
  • Integration Center: primary middleware for EC-to-payroll replication
  • Payroll Control Center (PCC): monitoring payroll runs
  • Country-specific payroll configuration overview
  • Global Benefits: plan and enrolment configuration
  • Benefit plan types: health insurance, retirement, life insurance, flexible benefits
  • Open enrolment and qualifying life event enrolment
  • Benefit provider integration with external systems
Interview note — The Integration Center uses a source-filter-transform-target model similar to an ETL tool, and most EC-to-payroll integrations are built or managed here.

HR leaders make workforce decisions based on EC reports — consultants must know how to build and troubleshoot these reports.

  • Report types: Canvas Report, Table Report, Tile-Based Dashboard
  • Report Center: the unified reporting interface
  • People Analytics Embedded: operational reporting in-app
  • Workforce Analytics (WFA): dedicated advanced module
  • Building a Canvas Report: data sources, fields, filters
  • Calculated columns and formulas
  • Scheduled report delivery via email
  • People Profile Stories: narrative-style Story Reports
  • Role-based report access restricted via RBP
Interview note — Canvas Reports allow free-form layout design with charts, tables and filters in one view, while Table Reports are simpler tabular outputs better suited for export and audit purposes.

Employee Central is the data foundation for the entire SuccessFactors suite — every talent process draws employee and organisational data from EC.

  • EC to Recruiting: offer-accepted-to-hire data flow
  • EC to Onboarding: task triggers upon hire
  • EC to Learning: job attributes feeding assignments
  • EC to Performance & Goals: review cycle data
  • EC to Succession Planning: position and talent pool linkage
  • EC to SAP S/4HANA HCM via SAP Integration Suite / iFlows
  • Cost Center integration between EC and S/4HANA FI
  • Joule AI integration for HR self-service, powered by SAP-RPT-1
Interview note — The most common integration failure between Recruiting and EC is a Foundation Object mismatch — a Department or Location selected in Recruiting that isn't yet configured in EC causes hire creation to fail.

Most EC implementations are multi-country — global organisations cannot afford a separate system per country, making localisation one of the most consistently tested skills.

  • Country-Specific Data Models for legal compliance fields
  • Locale and multi-language configuration in a single instance
  • Country-specific Foundation Objects: entities, pay structures, calendars
  • Data Privacy and GDPR: consent, right to erasure, retention rules
  • Country-Specific Workflows per legal entity
  • Global vs Local HR processes — what's standardised vs configured locally
  • Supported countries and country-specific packs
Interview note — GDPR compliance in EC is primarily managed through the Data Privacy Management framework — consent records, purpose-based processing, and automated deletion after the mandated retention period.

The capstone is the most important module for portfolio building and certification preparation — proof of a complete implementation, not just isolated configuration tasks.

  • End-to-end application of the full EC implementation lifecycle
  • Integration of Data Models, Foundation Objects, RBP, Workflows, Business Rules, Time Off, Compensation
  • Full employee lifecycle: hire → promotion → transfer → leave → return → termination
  • Reporting and analytics for HR leadership
  • Stakeholder-ready presentation of the implemented solution
Interview note — Structure implementation answers around the phases: Discover → Design → Configure → Test (UAT) → Deploy (go-live) → Run (support) — and describe your role in each phase.

What learners say after finishing this course

This rating is specific to the SuccessFactors Employee Central program above — not an average across Upskeeling's other courses. We show the breakdown as collected rather than just the headline number, because the detail tells you more than the average does.

4.8
From 245+ verified learner reviews of this course
5 ★
181 (74%)
4 ★
42 (17%)
3 ★
22 (9%)

The 5-star reviews consistently mention the same thing: the RBP and Business Rules modules turning a genuinely confusing part of EC into something they could configure and troubleshoot with confidence. The 4-star group was happy overall but wanted more repetition time on the harder modules — Workflows and multi-country localisation came up most. The 3-star reviews were the most useful to us internally: a recurring note was wanting more guided lab time before the capstone. We've since added an extra guided configuration lab ahead of Module 18.
